Lightning Protection

Protection from Lightning is very common aspect in any kind of structure, building, industry or home. The high range of current can cause serious damage to any person or equipment nearby. It can even cause fire. Hence lightning protection systems are used to prevent lightning strike damage to structures.

There are 3 General type of Conventional Lighting protection
THE LIGHTNING ROD
  • The lightning rod is a metallic capture tip placed at the top of the building. It is earthed by one or more conductors.
THE LIGHTNING ROD WITH TAUT WIRES
  • These wires are stretched above the structure to be protected they are used to protect special structures – rocket launching areas, substations, military applications and protection of high voltage overhead lines.
THE LIGHTNING CONDUCTOR WITH MESHED CAGE
  • This protection involves placing numerous down conductors/tapes symmetrically all around the building
  • This type of lightning protection system is used for highly exposed building housing very sensitive installations such as computer rooms

Apart from the protection from lightning strikes, we should also consider protection of our equipment’s or company assets from transients. For that we uses Surge Protection devices (SPD).

ESE (EARLY STREAMER EMISSION)

The ESE devices are lightning attracts, and in that sense, their purpose is the same as that of conventional “lightning rods.” ESE devices, however, differ from conventional lightning rods in that they are equipped in some fashion to increase the efficiency of lightning attraction and thereby to extend the effective range of protection over and above that of conventional lightning rods.

An early streamer emission air terminal differs from a conventional air terminal or lightning rod in that it is equipped with a device that supposedly enhances the probability of initiating an upward propagating discharge (streamer) to connect with the downward propagating leader of a lightning stroke. Hence enhancing the lightning catching ability.

SURGE PROTECTION DEVICE (SPD)
  • Surge protective device (SPD) is the IEC term given to a device intended to limit transient voltages and divert surge current
  • Eliminating potential differences to service conductors and thereby reducing the risk of flash over and possible resulting fire

There are 3 types of SPD depending on their installation area
TYPE1
  • The Type 1 SPD is recommended in the specific case of service-sector and industrial buildings, protected by a lightning protection system or a meshed cage.
  • It protects electrical installations against direct lightning strokes. It can discharge the back-current from lightning spreading from the earth conductor to the network conductors.
  • Type 1 SPD is characterized by a 10/350 µs current wave.
TYPE2
  • The Type 2 SPD is the main protection system for all low voltage electrical installations. Installed in each electrical switchboard, it prevents the spread of overvoltages in the electrical installations and protects the loads.
  • Type 2 SPD is characterized by an 8/20 µs current wave.
TYPE3
  • These SPDs have a low discharge capacity. They must therefore mandatorily be installed as a supplement to Type 2 SPD and in the vicinity of sensitive loads.
  • Type 3 SPD is characterized by a combination of voltage waves (1.2/50 μs) and current waves (8/20 μs).
